Team North To Play For Bronze Tomorrow

This may come as a surprise to many people who live here in Thompson, but Team North will be playing for a hockey medal tomorrow for the second time this week. The boys took home bronze on Wednesday, and the girls will play tomorrow. Just like their male counterparts, the female Team North is made up of girls both from the north, and all around the province.

Lee Cummings is the head coach of Team North, and says that he’s glad to be back behind the bench again after coaching the Midget “AAA” Norman Wild last year. He said that he really likes the fact that the team is made up of girls from the different parts of the province. He said that it’s exciting for him to be able to coach girls who are looking to make their mark on Hockey Manitoba, hoping to earn a spot that will compete at the Canada Games next year in Red Deer, Alberta.

Cummings said that the hardest part of his job is making sure the girls are put in a spot where they can succeed and showcase their talents. He said that some of the girls have to move to a different position, as there is always an abundance of centres. He said that win or lose it’s exciting to be back behind the bench again.

Kenzer Amy is one of the girls on the team not from the NorMan region. This past season, the 16-year-old Birtle, MB native was a member of the Midget “AAA” Yellowhead Chiefs. She put up one goal and four assists this season in 31 games while playing defence. According to the Chiefs website, Kenzer said that one of her greatest achievements was being the captain of the Bantam “AAA” Chiefs during the 2015/2016 season.

When it comes to playing for a Manitoba Games medal, she said that its exciting and a great opportunity. Kenzer said that it was nerve-wracking at first to play with a bunch of girls that she doesn’t normally play with, but that they’re a great group. She added that it didn’t take long to find chemistry on the ice with her teammates, and that her highlight of the games has been being here and having new opportunities.

The girls will be playing for bronze tomorrow morning at 9:00am.
