MKO Chiefs in Ottawa Call for Rights, Recognition and a New Nation-to-Nation Relationship

MKO Chiefs are calling for concrete action on treaty rights, housing and economic Partnerships following meetings in Ottawa.

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak says First Nations MUST be involved from the start in decisions about major resource and infrastructure projects affecting their territories.

Chief David Monias called for an equal share of wealth generated from those territories, while Chief Delia Hart pushed for action on overcrowded housing and more resources for policing, health and addictions.

MKO says First Nations support responsible development, but projects cannot come at the expense of Treaty and constitutional rights.

The Chiefs want the meetings to lead to sustained, accountable work between First Nations and governments.
