Family shares first hand experience with Ronald McDonald House Charity

The Perry Family from Thompson knows first hand the support to be found at Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg.

When their daughter Violet was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she 7 months old, the family including their older daughter spent long durations of time in Winnipeg for Violet’s treatment.

Destinee Perry, Violet’s mother, shares one important feature of the house here.

“They have beautiful kitchens for families to use and they also have volunteers come in I believe it was 3 or 4 nights a week and they will cook dinner. You just have to sign up and you can eat downstairs or if you are at the hospital or just not feeling it, you can pick up your dinner later too. It was very accommodating and very great.”

Perry said the cost to her family per night was just $10 and the location of the house made travel to and from the Children’s Hospital quick and easy.

Learn more about this important facility.  Catch the full interview with Destinee this afternoon at 12:40 and 5:10 on Thompson Today.

Ronald McDonald House Charities raises funds to continue to provide facilities for families with sick children

Ronald McDonald House Charities continuously raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House facilities they provide to families with sick children.

“There are play areas, there’s a theatre room, there’s a magic room, there are indoor and outdoor play structures, there are arts and craft stations. There are all kinds of spaces for families just to have some kind of normalcy during a time that is anything but normal.”

Since Ronald McDonald House in Winnipeg opened 40 years ago, it has expanded from a 14-bedroom facility to 40 bedrooms, growing from 11-thousand square feet to 60-thousand square feet.

Galagan said the Winnipeg Ronald McDonald House serves families in Manitoba, North Western Ontario and even into Saskatchewan and Alberta, depending on the medical services the children need.

Skunk sightings in Thompson

Thompson residents have reported sightings of skunks inside city limits over the last couple weeks.

While it’s not common, a provincial spokesperson said skunks that are observed in the Thompson area are within their typical species range, which is extensive and covers most of Manitoba and extends north of the city.

Skunks are not dangerous other than the risk of spraying or in rare cases where the skunk is infected with rabies.

If encountered, skunks should be given plenty of space.

Slowly and quietly move away from the skunk so it is not startled.  Pets should be kept on a tight leash to ensure they don’t approach the skunk.

There is no need to report a skunk sighting to authorities, but you may wish to warn other people in the area so that they are aware of the potential for an encounter.

Mayor Colleen Smook sends letter to Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure to keep Thompson updated in fire situations

On City Beat yesterday, Mayor Colleen Smook offered details about a letter she sent to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Lisa Naylor in May.

Here she explains what prompted her to write the letter.

“In the last couple of years, when there have been fires around us or the surrounding Northern region, Thompson hasn’t been kept in the loop at all until all of a sudden, there are buses of evacuees heading into Thompson.”

Smook said it is important that the city be kept updated in those situations.

She added that this year, the communication with the Emergency Management Organization was more collaborative.

However, she believes that the city needs to improve on services to evacuees once they arrive here.

She acknowledges that we have a small Red Cross contingent here in the city and the province needs to jump in to make sure there are enough people on hand to help during emergencies.

CFIB reports shows that Manitoba

The Workers Compensation Board in Manitoba has some extra funds in its coffers, and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business wants to see it back in the hands of employers.

Research by the CFIB has shown Manitoba, along with 5 other workers’ compensation boards - or WCBs - are over funded to the tune of almost $5 billion.

Tyler Slobogian, a senior policy analyst with the CFIB, explains Manitoba’s situation.

“Manitoba’s board sits overfunded by about 381 million dollars despite returning 118 million just earlier this year. We estimate that returning that excess WCB money to employers in Manitoba to provide small businesses with five employees around 35 hundred dollars if issued through rebates.”

Slobogian adds that Ontario is the only province that legislates the return of surplus funds, but the CFIB is advocating for the other provinces and territories to do the same.

Hear more from him about this on Thompson Today at 12:40 and 5:10 this afternoon.
