Bombers Fall In Melfort

The Flin Flon Bombers made their way to Melfort last night hoping to ride the wave of a hard fought 2 - 1 win against Humboldt on Saturday.

After a scoreless first period,  the Bombers got the first goal of the game on the powerplay when Carter Anderson got his team leading 7th of the season. Anderson received a beautiful pass from Koen Senft from behind the Mustang net and Anderson made no mistake beating Kristian Coombs.

It looked like it might be the Bombers night with Kenny Marquart making some beautiful saves to keep his team in front, but Flin Flon had some defensive break downs which led to three Mustang goals in a minute seventeen span.

At 15:21 of the second,  three Bombers collided in front of their own bench which allowed Owen Nelson to skate down the ice untouched and he beat Kenny Marquart low stick side for his first of the season.

Less than thirty seconds later Nolan Roberts snuck a puck in from the blue line, and Nolan Patterson followed that one up with a goal twenty seconds later that which stood up as the game winner.

Reeling 3 to 1 entering the third, Flin Flon played well and capitalized on a Ryder Ringor deflection to make it 3 to 2 with just under five minutes remaining.

The Bombers did get a late powerplay and got a chance to pull the goalie late as well but could not get the equalizer and dropped the game 3 to 2 despite out shooting the Mustangs 40 to 32.

Besides scoring his 6th goal of the year, Ryder Ringor was amazing in the faceof circle and I counted 9 straight faceoff wins in the offensive zone. Ringor has been a welcome addition in a season that hasn't started well for the Bombers.

After last night's loss Flin Flon will drop to 6-9-1 and have now lost 6 of their last 7 games. With Laronge winning in Notre Dame last night, the Bombers are now out of the playoffs and have dropped to 9th overall.

Melfort improves to a league best 11 and 3 and are back in first place.

Flin Flon will now get an  8 day break and won't be back in action til November the 8th when they host Melfort. The next broadcast on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com will be the next night in Nipawin November the 9th.

Bombers Add Former QMJHL Forward

The Flin Flon Bombers completed a trade with the MJHL’s Niverville Nighthawks and have made changes to their overage situation.

The Bombers have sent overage forward Austin Montgomery-Parsons to Niverville in exchange for a Player Development Fee. Montgomery-Parsons was acquired prior to the season opener from the Wellington Dukes of the OJHL and chipped in with 2 goals and an assist in 10 games with the Bombers.

The Bombers have signed former QMJHL forward Leighton Carruthers. The Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia product began this season with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and had 2 assists in 2 games. Carruthers had been with the Rouyn-Noranda’s organization since the 2021-2022 season and has over 200 games over major junior experience. In 220 career regular season games in the QMJHL, Leighton produced 47 points. During the 2023-2024 QMJHL playoffs, Carruthers put up 2 goals and 3 assists in 10 games helping the Huskies reach the Western Conference Semi-Final.

“We are excited to add Leighton to our group. His experience and physicality will be a huge asset to our team. We identified Leighton months ago through our Eastern Canada connections in hopes that we would be a good fit for him if things didn’t work out in the QMJHL.” Bombers Head Coach & General Manager, Mike Reagan.

Carruthers will be making his Bombers debut tonight in Melfort.

Kodiaks Season Comes To An End

The Creighton Kodiaks 6-man football team saw their season come to an end this past Saturday in Provincials  as they limped into Rosetown with a very injured ball club.

The Kodiaks were missing their starting quarterback Josh Trumbley, Brayden Eyres and Payton Pellietier and lost a few more players early in the game Saturday.

Rosetown also has one of the strongest football programs in the province and it showed as the Royals took it to  the Kodiaks 62 - 12.

Creighton got their offense from Brody Grant who caught a 70-yard touchdown pass and Kwinton Lycan who ran in a touchdown from the goal line.

Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk summed up his team's final game on Saturday. " I don't want to make excuses,  but it sure would of been nice to dream what it would have been like to be full strength  with the team we went into Shellbrook and Hague with.  You can't replace your starting quarterback for the most part with his experience and speed. Even though Rylan did a fantastic  job it is more the defensive players that worried us with the matchup against Rosetown.  The icing on the cake was losing Payton and there is no one in the league I could replace Payton with. I thought we did a good job as we limped into Rosetown but the injuries continued to mount up."

Despite the loss in Rosetown on Saturday,  it was still a very successful season for Creighton who finished the regular season at 4 and 2 and were the first ever team from the North to get a Provincial seed.

The last order of business will be the year end banquet where they will say goodbye to 12 graduating players at a date to yet be determined.

Bombers Hang On For A Gutsy 2 To 1 Win

The 5 game losing streak is over as the Flin Flon Bombers were able to ride a 39 save performance from Kenny Marquart and hold off the Humboldt Bronco's 2 to 1 on Saturday night.

Flin Flon thought they deserved a better fate the night before as they let a 2-0 lead slip away before falling 4 - 3.

The Bombers wouldn't be denied this time and played three complete periods. After a scoreless first period the Bombers jumped on the board when defenseman Nathan Schaefer was able to sneak a puck past Edouard Gauthier just outside the slot.

Schaefer gets rewarded with his first ever SJHL goal with a nice shot off the left post and in. The Bronco's came back just 32 seconds later to tie it on a powerplay goal from Jeter Korte, his second in as many nights.

The game stayed tied til early in the third when Reid Arberry was able to jump on a juicy rebound in front of the Bronco net to beat Ty Matonovich who came in to replace Gauthier who tweeked something and had to leave the game.

Flin Flon took advantage and beat Matonovich who was cold after sitting on the bench for two periods. Gauthier was putting on a clinic and made some unreal saves including one of the best glove saves I have seen in a long time on Cater Anderson.

This stood up as the game winner as Kenny Marquart did his job stopping all 12 Bronco shots in the third period to pick up his second win of the year.

The game definitely  felt like a playoff atmosphere as these two long time foes always bring the best out of each other. It is a shame that will be the last time we see the Bronco's at  the Whitney Forum this year.

With the changes to the schedule this year, you play teams in your division 8 times and teams outside the division 4 times. Flin Flon will travel to Humboldt for a pair of games January the 11th and 12th.

A big two points for Flin Flon who improve to 6-8-1 and sit 7 points behind the division leading Melfort Mustangs. The Bombers occupy 8th overall, 3 points behind Yorkton.

Humboldt will fall to 8-4-1 and are currently fifth overall, but only one point behind fourth place Kindersley and two points behind Weyburn and Melville for second.

The Bombers will head back to Melfort for their fourth meeting of the year on Wednesday before getting an 8 day break. The Mustangs lead the season series 2 to 1 including a 4 to 1 win in their most recent meeting  back on October the 12th.

You can catch Wednesday's game on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 8:10.

OLC Wolverines attended Volleyball Tournament

The Oscar Lathlin Collegiate Wolverines are back home after taking part in the McGregor Varsity Girls Volleyball Invitational this past weekend.

The girls placed 2nd in their pool and 4th overall after going 3-3 on the weekend.

Both the varsity girls and boys volleyball teams of Oscar Lathlin Collegiate will be travelling to Snow Lake this Friday and Saturday to take part in the Jace Ryan Memorial Tournament.

Northern Manitoba Blizzard Update

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard earned three out of four possible points this past weekend against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

The Blizz got off to a hot start in the first period of Friday's game with Miguel Bouvier scoring two back-to-back goals in the first ten minutes.

Late in the first, former Blizz player now Wolverine, Griffin Ayotte, scored a shorthanded goal, making the score 2-1.

Early in the third, Griffin Ayotte scored his second goal for Wayway and sent the game to overtime.

Both teams wouldn't give an inch in the extra period which eventually led them to a shootout.   Dru Mushumanski's goal was the one that ended the contest and broke a three-game losing streak for Wayway.

Saturday's game was just as competitive, the first goal came from Marlen Edwards during a power play opportunity in the second period.

Not too long after,  Jaxon Grosdidier and the Wolverines tied things up making it 1-1 going into the third.

Dru Mushumanski gave Wayway a one-goal lead with a goal near the eight-minute mark but no more than a minute later Quincy Supprien and the power play unit chalked up a massive game-tying goal.

Shortly after Isaac Tomchak and Quincy Supprien added two more to the tally making the final score 4-2.

The Blizz play two more games here at home this Friday and Saturday against the Winkler Flyers, puck drop is 7:00 P.M. for both games.

Kodiaks Off To Rosetown

The Creighton Kodiaks six man football team hit the road for Rosetown as Provincials will start tomorrow.

The Kodiaks are coming off a very successful regular season where they went 4-2 including a convincing 51 to 14 win over Hague in their final home game.

This is the first time a team from Northern Saskatchewan has qualified for the Provincial bracket as the Kodiaks finished second in their conference.

It won't be easy as the Kodiaks suffered some devastating injuries late in the season to quarterback Josh Trumbley and other impact players in Brayden Eyres and Payton Pellietier.

The Rosetwon Rpyals are also one of the top 6 man football teams in Saskatchewan and finished their season 6-0 out scoring the opposition 270 to 30.

Saying that , Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk looks forward to the challenge. " First of all we are really excited, we have earned the right to go to Rosetown as we have had a really good season. I am extremely happy with how the guys have performed this year playing in a hard conference. With a 4 and 2 record we get to  go and play a really good 6 and 0 football team in Rosetown and we understand who we are playing against and what it means. We are going to go and give it ouir best shot."

The game will take place tomorrow  at Rosetown Central High school with a 1pm Sask time kickoff. Since it is provincials they will be charging admission including $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students grade 7 to 12.

You can follow updates on the Creighton Kodiak facebook page as well as by listening to 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com.

Former Bomber Bench Boss Finds A New Home

Congratulations to former Flin Flon Bomber bench boss Larry Wintoneak on being named the new Head Coach of the Kam River Fighting Walleye of the SIJHL.

Wintoneak,  who is originally from Thunder Bay brings lots of experience to his new team. Larry coached the Bombers starting  early in the 1995-96 season and stayed with the franchise til 2001, when they hosted the National Championship guiding the Bombers to a second place finish in the country.

That year,  Flin Flon finished the regular season at 44-15-3 with 91 points which is the highest in franchise history.

Wintoneak also went on to coach the Laronge Ice Wolves and Kindersley Klippers taking them to the league final his second year with the team. He has also coached the Thunder Bay Flyers and Dryden Ice Dogs.

The Walleye released a statement on social media and Wintoneak had this to say about joining his new team.

“First I would like to thank Kevin, Derek, and the ownership group for giving me this great opportunity to be the head coach of this franchise,” Wintoneak said. “It’s a first class organization and it has everything that a player or coach would want. Hockey is a great game and it’s a privilege to be able to coach Junior A hockey. With 100 plus teams in the CJHL I am grateful to be one of those coaches.”

Larry will make his debut behind the Fighting Walleye bench this Friday at Norwest Arena.

Bombers Shut Out By Terriers

Another solid effort, but unfortunately the same result for the Flin Flon Bombers.

Last night Flin Flon fired 50 shots at the Yorkton net, but came up empty losing to the Yorkton Terriers.

Riley Cormier was able to score on the Terriers first shot of the game and that is all the offense they would need as they picked up the road victory.

Aiden Kniutson and Dustin Renas would add insurance goals in the second and third periods. Flin Flon did all the right things by driving to the net, creating screens in front of the Terrier goal but just couldn't put a puck past Callum Creig.

Creig also played very well, stopping all 50 shots in his direction and brought a .943 save % into the game and is now 5-0 on the season.

Kenny Marquart got the start for the Bombers and he did play well in stopping 18 of 21, but once again he didn't get any offensive support. Marquart has started 8 games this year and the Bombers have only mustered 12 goals in the games Kenny has started making it very difficult to beat anybody.

After being stripped for 3 wins and 6 points earlier in the day for using an ineligible player,  Yorkton looked solid and improved to 6-6 and leap frogged both the Bombers and Ice Wolves for 7th spot overall.

Flin Flon slips to 5-7-1 and currently sit 8th overall with the Humboldt Broncos coming to town this weekend.

The Bronco's are a solid 7-3-1 and will provide a stiff test this weekend as Brayden Klimosko will make his return to the Forum for the first time as the Humboldt bench boss.

Games are 7:30 Friday and Saturday, with the Saturday game broadcast on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 7:10.

Wings Sweep Bombers As Offense Continues To Sputter

It was a tough weekend for the Flin Flon Bombers who dropped both games to the Weyburn Red Wings by scores of 2-1 and 4-1.

On Friday, Flin Flon outshot the Wings 42 to 24 but only could put one puck past Wing netminder Angelo Zol.

Zol made a lot of highlight reel saves including a break away by local product Ryder Mucha and stopped Carter Anderson on several occasions.

Specialty teams were the difference with both Weyburn goals coming on the powerplay from Liam Fitzgerald and Cyprus Smith Davis. Carter Cormier also scored his third on the powerplay, but that was the only goal the Bombers could muster on Zol.

Kenny Marquart played his most complete game of the season and stopped 22 out of 24 but was short on offensive support.

On Saturday, the Wings came out and played a lot better and put the Bombers in a big hole,  taking a 3 to 0 lead into the third period.

Braigh LeGrandeur, Drew Molde and Ethan Dekay scored the goals for the Wings and looked like they were in control of the game.

Flin Flon had a great third period and outshot the Wings 19 to 9 but, once again had a hard time getting any offense going.  Koen Senft did manage to redirect a shot past Dazza Mitchell for his team leading 6th of the year, but they couldn't draw any closer.

Blake Betson would  seal the deal with an empty netter as the Wings remain red hot,  winning their 7th straight game while Flin Flon dropped their third straight.

The Bombers have only scored three goals in those losses and only one goal has been  5-on-5 so offense is a concern. Flin Flon did get a little good news as Austin Parsons will be back in the lineup after serving his 5-game suspension.

Parsons should help with the offense and has three points including two goals in 7 games.

After the pair of losses this weekend the Bombers will fall to 5-6-1 and remain second in the Sherwood tied with Laronge and sit 8th overall. Weyburn improves to 7-4 and are one point behind second place Melville and two points behind Yorkton for first overall.

It doesn't get any easier for the Bombers as the first place Yorkton Terriers come to town tomorrow and are 8-3 and have scored a whopping 49 goals in those games to lead the league.

Flin Flon who are usually so good defensively have given up 40 goals in 12 games and are 10th in the league with goals against. Only Notre Dame and Nipawin have given up more.

This will be the second meeting of the year between the Terriers and Bombers with Yorkton winning on home ice 4 to 1 back on October the 1st.

We will broadcast the game on Flo and our next broadcast on radio will be on Saturday against the Humboldt Broncos.

Decent Road Trip For The Norman Northstars

It was a decent weekend for the Norman Northstars who went 1-1-1 on their road trip which wrapped up yesterday.

On Friday,  the Northstars went against Yellowhead and beat the Chiefs 4 to 3. Daylin Monias of Thompson scored the game winner.

Saturday, the Northstars made their way to Swan River to play the Parkland Rangers,  They lost on Saturday 7 to 3 and 3 to 2 in OT Sunday.

Reed Scadden had a goal and an assist on Saturday and Rankin Inlet's Liam Tattuinee had both goals yesterday.

Norman sits 9th overall at 3-6-1.

They are back on the road this weekend as they head to Souris to face off against the Southwest Cougars Friday and Saturday.

Tough Weekend for The OCN Storm

It was a tough weekend for your OCN Storm as they went 0-2 on the road against the Norway House North Stars.

Saturday's game was all about the Stars from start to finish as they scored four goals in the first, three in the second and two in the third.

The Storm were able to put three goals together late in the third but it was ultimately too late,  making the final score 9-3 for the Stars.

Sunday was a much better showing for the Storm.  The Stars had a 7-2 lead late in the second but the Storm showed no quit as they racked up three back-to-back goals making it a 5-7 game.

Storm Captain Drew Peters got the boys one step closer with a goal early in the third but it just wasn't enough as the North Stars won 7-6.

Luckily OCN can bounce back this upcoming weekend as they travel north to NCN to take on the Flames at the Gilbert McDonald Arena.

Northern Manitoba Blizzard pick up two points this past weekend

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard picked up two points this past weekend after playing two games on the road.

On Friday the Blizz took on the uncrowned top team in the M.J.H.L  in the Steinbach Pistons and lost 6-2.

The Blizz were very much in the game until the third period when the Pistons scored two unanswered goals, Max Collyer and Cheechoo Lathlin notched the two lone goals for the Blizz.

Saturday was a much different story and result as the Blizz defeated the Selkirk Steelers 3-2, Selkirk is currently the top team in the league having twenty-two points overall.

Sam Zagari and Keenan McNeill both scored power-play goals in the first and second periods, and it was Sam Zagari once again who put the nail in the coffin late in the third period.

The Blizz will now play four games in the next two weeks here at home, this upcoming weekend they'll take on the Waywayseecappo Wolverines and then next weekend they welcome the Winkler Flyers to town.

Kodiaks Impressive In Final Regular Season Game

Despite some key injuries the Creighton Kodiaks were flying high at the Creighton Field yesterday.

The Kodiaks took it to the Hague Panthers 51 to 14 to finish up the Saskatchewan 6 man football season at 4-2.

Hague will finish the year at 1-5.

Creighton got their touchdowns from Brody Grant who had two, Rogan Hlady, Payton Pellietier, Kayleb Lycan, Matthew Lavis and Cory Lane.

Hlady also kicked 4 converts and Ethan Lavis had a good day on the defensive side of the ball with two interceptions.

Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk gave us his thoughts on finishing the season 4-2.  " It is bitter sweet missing three  guys , now with PK as it looks like he may be done for the year. Guys stepped up and I think we got a great effort from Rylan and a great effort from Matthew and Brody with a lot of speed today. We are extremely happy and we are going to celebrate our 4 and 2 and we will get ready for Rosetown. I am extremely happy it happened on our home field on a beautiful day today."

Once again it is confirmed that Creighton will finish 4-2 and second in their conference and become the first team from Northern Saskatchewan to make it to the provincial bracket.

The Kodiaks will travel to Rosetown who are ranked second in the entire province and will be a huge challenge with the Kodiaks missing three  impact players  including quarterback Josh Trumbley, Brayden Eyres and now PK Pellietier.

Rosetown is extremely strong and head into provincials with a 263 to 33 point differential.

The game will take place on Saturday October the 26th at 1pm.

Norman Northstars Hit The Road

After winning their first game of the season,  the Norman Northstars U-18 team  have dropped 4 straight  including a pair of games to the Winnipeg Bruins last weekend.

Norman who have been out scored 24 to 7 in those four games will hit the road for three starting tonight in Yellowhead. Norman will then travel to Parkland for a pair of games Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

The games against Parkland will be played in Swan River. Norman will not  return home to play a game until  the weekend of October the 26th and 27th  against Brandon.

The Norman Northstars Under-15 AAA hockey team will play their home openers this weekend.

Saturday night, they play at 7 pm against the Interlake Lightning in the C.A. Nesbitt Arena.

Game two goes Sunday morning at 11 am.

All games are free admission, but there will be a silver collection and 50/50 draws.

Flin Flon Bombers Host The Weyburn Red Wings This Weekend

The Flin Flon Bombers return to the ice tonight after a 5 day break to face a very dangerous Weyburn Red Wings team at the Whitney Forum  that have scored 35 goals in their last 5 games.

After dropping their first four games of the year,  the Wings have reeled off 5 straight wins including a 9 to 1 thumping in Nipawin on Wednesday night.

Weyburn is led offensively by the recent additions of Jerome Maharaj, Ethan Delkay amd Jaxson Ruthven who have 13 goals between them since returning from the BCHL. They have been lethal and are as good as any other forward group in the league.

Another big factor has been the play of 19 year old goaltender Angelo Zol who is 4-2 with a gaa of 2.85 and a save % of .919.

The Bombers did beat the Wings in Weyburn back on October the 4th, but the Wings are a totally different team now than they were then.

Flin Flon is coming off a split with the Melfort Mustangs from last weekend,  where they won on Friday 6 to 3 at home before heading to Melfort and losing 4 to 1 on Saturday.

The Bombers continue to plat games with a depleted lineup including injuries to Keefe Gruener and Kylynn Olafson and suspensions to Austin Parsons and Reid Arberry.

Massimo Urbani who has been a pleasant surprise in goal and has been sick all week will not be able to go this weekend so Kenny Marquart who is trying to find his game will start tonight.

Norman Northstars to play home openers this weekend

The Norman Northstars Under-15 AAA hockey team will play their home openers this weekend.

Saturday night, they play at 7 pm against the Interlake Lightning in the C.A. Nesbitt Arena.

Game two goes Sunday morning at 11 am.

All games are free admission, but there will be a silver collection and 50/50 draws.

OCN Storm Go 1-1 Over the Weekend

The OCN Storm went 1-1 against the defending champion Peguis Juniors over the weekend to start their 2024/2025 campaign.

The Juniors were winless after three games but were able to pick up an 8-4 win against the Storm in their home opener on Saturday.

Going into the third, the Storm attempted a comeback but fell short.

Sunday's game was a way different story as the Storm thumped the Juniors 5-2, goals were scored by Cedrick Puffalt,  Keillan Holland, Maddox Dominey and Tye Burke.

The OCN  Storm are on the road for the next four games and will return home on November 2nd and 3rd for a two-game doubleheader against the Cross Lake Islanders.

Tomorrow the Storm will travel down to Norway House to play against the North Stars.

3 Road Games Down, Two More To Go

Your Northern Manitoba Blizzard played three road games over the long weekend and went 2-1.

The road trip started last week Friday at the Niverville Recreation Centre where your Blizz picked up a 1-0 win over the Nighthawks.

Keenan McNeill scored the lone goal and it was Taye Timmerman who earned the shutout by stopping all twenty-eight shots on goal.

Moving on to Saturday's game, the Blizz took on the Winnipeg Blues and lost 4-2.

The Blizz had a 2-1 lead going into the third period, but the game ultimately got away from them.

Marlen Edwards and Miguel Bouvier scored the only two goals.

The boys then capped off their three-game road trip with a 4-1 win against the Winnipeg Freeze, Miguel Bouvier had another great night scoring two goals for the Blizz.

The other two goals were scored by Cheechoo Lathlin and John Del Verne.

The Blizz will now play two more road games tonight and tomorrow against the Steinbach Pistons and Selkirk Steelers.

Kodiaks Wrap Up Football Regular Season Tomorrow

The Creighton Kodiaks will wrap up the 6 man football regular season tomorrow at the Creighton Field against the Hague Panthers.

The Kodiaks enter the game at 3-2 and have officially clinched a playoff spot after Shellbrook beat Hague 69 to 52 last Friday. Both teams are 1-4 and can't catch the Kodiaks in the standings.

Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk comments on taking a northern team to the Provincial bracket for the first time. " I am very happy for the players and coach's, when we entered this league our vision  was to make Provincials even take a deep run in Provincials. This is our first crack at playing in a Provincial game and our conference is really hard and all the teams in our conference know how to win. They have always thought of us as a weak team and this year we not only gained respect for our community and team,  but we showed when you have the players and the program you can do good things. The guys are excited and they should be."

Kickoff is going to be at 4pm, Manitoba time and don't forget that Northland Ford will be on site and  excepting donations on behalf of the local food bank.

It is the We Scare Hunger Campaign and they will be accepting non persihable food items and every day items like tooth paste, toilet paper, soap, shampoo and anything else you can think of.

It is already determined that Creighton will kick off Provincials in Rosetown on Saturday October the 21st at 1pm.

U-13 Bombers Squared Off With The Pas And Thompson This Past Weekend

The U-13 Kinsmen Bombers travelled down to the Pas this past weekend to play both the Pas and Thompson in the first action for all three teams this season.

Here are the results:

Game one Thompson and The Pas ended in a 3-2 win for the Thompson miners. The Pas scored two late goals in the third but were unable to tie the game.

Game 2 had Thompson beat the FF Bombers 5-1. The game was much tighter then the score reflected but the miners managed the win. Brody cooper was the lone goal scorer for the bombers.

Game 3 saw the FF Bombers drop their second game of the day to The Pas Huskies 3-2. The bombers controlled much of the play but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Bentley Crone scored both bomber goals. All three games were very competitive and should make for some great hockey all season with their northern rivals.

Next action for the Bombers will be November 1-3 when the team travels to Prince Albert for the U13A tournament.

Queens Win Volleyball Tournament In Swan River

It was a great weekend of volleyball for the Hapnot Kings and Queens this past weekend in Swan River for the Doug Oberlin tournament.

The Queens went 4-0 in the round robin with wins over Swan River, Ethelbert, OCN and Norquay.

That put them in the semi's against RD Parker and they beat them two sets to one including 15 to 10 in the tie breaker. That would put the Queens up against Swan River in the final and the Queens prevailed winning in two straight sets.

Hapnot finishes first and have one of the top volleyball programs in the province and are currently ranked fourth.

The Hapnot Kings also had a good weekend going 2-1 in the round robin with wins over the RD Parker JV team and Swan River. Their one loss came against the RD Parker Senior team.

The Kings made it to the playoff round and dropped both games to MBCI out of the Pas in the semi's and put together a good effort against RD Parker for third losing 2-1 including 15 to 12 in the tiebreaker to finish fourth.

MBCI finished first beating Swan River two sets to none in the final.

Bombers And Mustangs Split

Quite a contrast in  the two games this past weekend between  the Flin Flon Bombers and Melfort Mustangs.

The two teams hooked up in a home and home with the Bombers winning on Friday 6 to 3 at the Whitney Forum.

Despite  giving up a goal to Danton Cox less than two minutes into the game the Bombers had one of their best efforts of the year.

All the big guns  got going with Carter Anderson and Koen Seft leading the way with a pair of goals. Senft had a career night picking up 5 points including three assists.

17 year old local product  Wyatt Stinton scored his first ever SJHL goal when he was the recipient of a nice pass behind the Melfort net from Carter Cormier.

Cormier also scored his third of the year on the powerplay late in the game to seel it.

The other Melfort goals came from Kaleb Binner and Zayden Sadlemyer.

17 year old goaltender Massimo Urbani kept up his winning ways by stopping 27 out of 30 for his fourth win of the year. Kristian Coombs played very well despite taking the loss with 34 saves on 39 shots and stopped Carter Anderson on two clear cut  break aways.

After a slow start this season on the powerplay, the Bombers went 2 for 6 and now sit third overall with the man advantage.

Saturday was a totally different game at the Palace in Melfort. A tough break for the Bombers as Carter Anderson wasn't able to go due to taking a puck in the hand the night before.

So Flin Flon was without the services of three dominant 20 year old's including Keefe Gruener and Kylynn Olafson who got injured on the last road trip.

Flin Flon was hoping to bring the momentum into Melfort after their big win on Friday,  but got into penalty trouble early and  were assessed four straight penalties and found themselves down 2 men for almost 4 minutes.

The Bombers almost killed it off , but Reilley Kotai was able to beat Kenny Marquart with a low wrister with just under a minute remaining on the two man advantage and the Mustangs never looked back.

Leading 1-0 in the second the Mustangs caught fire and scored three goals in a span of just under 3 minutes to take control at 4-0.

Logan Belton, Jake Giacobbo and Kaleb Binner all found the back of the net.

Anthony Piccininno scored his first of the season early in the third for Flin Flon  but was the only Bomber player to beat Kristian Coombs on this night who made 29 saves.

Not to take anything away from Coombs, but he didn't have to make a lot of difficult saves as the Mustangs did an excellent job on shutting down the Flin Flon attack. You could count on one hand how many really good offensive chances the Bombers got.

Kenny Marquart suffered the loss for Flin Flon and made 32 saves on 36 shots and was the best Bomber player on this night. Marquart held his team in the game with many great stops and kept it from being a 12 to 1 game.

Marquart has not had a lot of offensive support as the Bombers have only scored 11 goals in the 5 games that Kenny has started in contrast to the 19 goals they have scored  in the four games that Urbani has started.

Flin Flon will fall to 5-4-1 and sit second in the Sherwood behind Melfort who is 6-2 after their dominant win on Saturday.

The Bombers will get ready to welcome the Weyburn Red Wings to town this weekend who will be bringing their high octave offense to the Whitney Forum.

The Wings are flying after out scoring Notre Dame and Yorkton 13 to 5 on the weekend and have become one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

This will be a great test for Flin Flon as it will also be Parent's Weekend and you will be able to catch Saturday's game on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com.

Tough Loss For The Kodiaks In Wakaw

The Creighton Kodiaks travelled down to Wakaw yesterday for 6 man football and suffered a 58 to 38 defeat.

It was a tough loss in more ways than just the score. Creighton lost some valuable players to  injuries and had a tough time especially on defense.

Saying that,  a lot of the rookies got a chance to play and competed very well trying to mount the comeback in the second half.

A tough loss to injury was starting quarterback Josh Trumbley who threw  for over 300 yards and four touchdown passes before leaving in the third quarter.

Rookie Rylan Grundred came in relief and managed to toss one touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter. The Kodiaks were also missing one of their best players in Payton Pellietier, who they really missed on defense.

Mathew Lavis had a good day hauling in two touchdown passes, Rogan Hlady also had two with the other touchdown coming from Myles Koivisto.

The Kodiaks had a lot of success through the air but couldn't mount much of a running game.

Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk talks about his team’s tough loss yesterday. We got off to a rough start and our best player wasn't in the lineup and that always hurts. I thought it was an opportunity for other players to step up and we were in a good mental place heading into the game. I thought all the seniors were ready to go but not having Payton on defense, we lost our dynamic on tackling and speed. Some of the other guys had a tough time adjusting in that first quarter and they jumped on us really early. The good news is I thought our guys played well in the second quarter and brought it to 20 points at the half. The guys were really working hard and then we lost two more players to injuries and had to play catch up the rest of the way."

Wakaw improves to 5-0 and the Kodiaks will fall to 3-2 and can still advance to Provincials. Matter of fact if Shellbrook beats Hague tonight the Kodiaks are in. If Hague wins than  it will come down to the final game of the year next Thursday when Hague visits the Creighton Field.

Hague would also have to beat Creighton by 13 points as the Kodiaks beat Hague by 12 points earlier in the season, so basically Creighton Starts with a 12-0 lead. Kickoff will be at 4pm, Manitoba time.

The registration meeting will include Mixed, ladies and Men's and the Hot Stove leagues.

The Flin Flon Bombers have been busy

Over the last two weeks, the Bombers have pulled off a flurry of roster moves beginning with the additions of Goaltender Jake Torget (06) and Right-Handed Defenceman Nathan Schaefer (06). Torget spent the 2023-2024 season with the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the BCEHL U18 and posted a 2.06 GAA in 21 starts. Jake was a late cut from the Trail Smoke Eaters of the BCHL and has already appeared in a game for the Bombers stopping 20 of 23 shots in the 4-2 loss to Estevan.

Schaefer chipped in with an assist in two games for the Blackfalds Bulldogs of the BCHL before being released. The Harper Woods, Michigan, product produced an impressive 67 points in 74 games for Victory Honda 18U AAA.

Sitting at seventeen forwards and nine defencemen the Bombers made a couple of moves to trim down the roster.

The Bombers have traded Forward Max Collyer (06) to the MJHL’s Northern Manitoba Blizzard in exchange for a Player Development Fee. The Onanole, Manitoba product was signed by the Bombers in the off-season after spending the previous three seasons with the MU18HL’s Yellowhead Chiefs. Collyer appeared in three games for the Bombers and had an assist in Saturday’s loss to Estevan.

On the backend, the Bombers have moved Conor Ryan (05) to the Nipawin Hawks in exchange for two SJHL Draft Picks (2025 2nd & 2025 4th) and a Player Development Fee. The Bombers also sent back a 2025 5th round pick. Ryan was acquired prior to the CJHL Trade Deadline last season from the Sherwood Park Crusaders. In eight games this season, Ryan had two assists.

Both the senior varsity girls and boys volleyball teams of MBCI travelled down to Roblin to take part in the Goose Lake High School Tournament.  The SV Girls picked up a win over the Swan Valley Tigers and placed 6th overall out of ten teams. Both squads will be heading to Swan River this weekend to compete in the Doug Oberlin Invitational.

Urbani Selected As Goalie Of The Week

It has been a bit of a slow  start for the Flin Flon Bombers who are 4-3-1 to start the young SJHL season.

There has been one pleasant surprise and that is the play of 17 year old goalie Massimo Urbani.

Urbani has been awarded the Sasktel Goalie Of The Week by the SJHL after his play on the Bombers recent southern road swing.

Massimo went 2-0 with wins over Notre Dame and Weyburn posting a 2.00 GAA and a save % of .940 with 60 saves in the two games.

The 17 year old from Coquitlam BC is 3-0 on the season with a GAA of 2.00 and a save % of .932.

The Bombers are back in action this weekend when they take on the Melfort Mustangs in a home and home Friday and Saturday. You can catch Saturday's game from Melfort on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com.

We will be broadcasting tonight's game live on CJAR, with our pre-game show starting at around 6:45 P.M.

Bombers Go 2-2 On Southern Swing

It wasn't the way the Flin Flon Bombers wanted to wrap up their Southern swing with a 4 to 2 setback in Estevan on Saturday.

The Bombers had a tough first period giving up a goal just 23 seconds in when the Bruins  stormed the net,  and Kent Moors was able to shovel in a loose puck past Jake Torget. They made it 2 to 0 midway through the opening period when Luke Hogan picked up his first of the season.

Flin Flon settled down and played very well in both the second and third and cut the deficit to 2 to 1,  when first year Bomber Evan Bossell picked up a puck along the boards and went in and beat Liam Hallet high glove side.

Down just a goal in the third, the Bombers poured it on but it was the Bruins who put the game away with a short handed goal from Odin George and empty netter from Captain Kade Kennedy.

Flin Flon did get a late powerplay goal from Carter Cormier  but it was far to late as the Bruins picked up their first win of the season 4 to 2.

New Bomber tender Jake Torget played well stopping 20 out of 23 and looks like he should have a bright future at only 17 years old. The Estevan goalie Liam Hallett was sensational stopping 41 out of 43  and was the big difference in the game.

Despite losing in Estevan on Saturday the Bombers did manage to go .500 on the trip at 2-2 with wins in Notre Dame and Weyburn after suffering a loss in Yorkton on Tuesday.

The Bomber record will drop to 4-3-1 and are one point behind Melfort for first in the division. Estevan gets their first win of the season and are 1-3-1.

Flin Flon has added a new defenseman in Nathan Schaefer who makes his way to the Bombers from the Blackfalds Bulldogs of the BCHL where he suited up for just two games before coming to Northern Manitoba.

The Bombers will now get a bit of a break between games and won't be back on the ice til this weekend when they face the Melfort Mustangs in a home and home .

Friday the defending league champs make their way to the Whitney Forum with the rematch in Melfort on Saturday which will be our next broadcast of Creighton Furniture Flin Flon Bomber Hockey on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com. It all begins with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 8:10 Manitoba time.

Kings And Queens Volleyball Results From The Weekend

The Senior Hapnot Queens and Kings attended a tournament in Roblin this past weekend.

It was another good weekend for the Queens who went 6-2 in the round robin beating Landmark, The Pas, Swan River and splitting with Major Pratt out of Russell.

That put them in the Championship bracket where they lost to Gilbert Plains in the Semi Finals which knocked them down to the Third Place game.

The Queens prevailed beating Goose Lake 2 sets to none 25 to 22 and 27 to 25.

It was a tough weekend for the Hapnot Kings who dropped all their round robin games to Landmark, Fisher Branch and Warren.

That knocked them down to the Consolation round and the Kings did beat Gilbert Plains 25 to 18, 21 to 25 and 15 to 12 and finished 11th overall.

Next up for the Kings And Queens will be a tournament in Swan River this weekend.

Kodiaks Fight Off Cold And Pick Up Third Win

The Creighton Kodiaks were able to battle the frosty conditions at the Creighton Field yesterday and knocked off Shellbrook 38 to 18 in 6 man football.

This pushed the Kodiak record to 3-1 and it was also their first win at home.

Due to the frigid temperatures, the Kodiaks kept the ball on the ground and it paid off with quarterback Josh Trumbley running in for two majors and Payton Pellietier scoring the other.

The Kodiaks were also able to air one out to Rogan Hlady who hauled in a 16 yard pass. Hlady also converted three converts.

Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk was pleased with the win. " It feels good and it would of been nice if it was a bit warmer. We brought the warmth to our sidelines with some big runs and I am proud of the guys. It was close for a while but I thought we just mentally ran away at the end."

Creighton has their sights on a playoff spot and if they can win one of their two last games would guarantee them a spot in Provincials. Next week they travel to Wakaw before wrapping up the regular season against Hague.

Be listening to 102.9 CFAR next Tuesday as Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk will be our special guest on the Norman Sportsline  as we will chat about the team's latest win, playoffs and the recent Northern Saskatchewan Football Jamboree that took place in Regina.

Bombers Get It Done In Wilcox

After a slow opening period the Flin Flon Bombers got on track in Wilcox and doubled up on the Notre Dame Hounds 4 to 2 last night.

Flin Flon gave up an early short handed goal when they  coughed up the puck at their blue line,  and Marko Djordjevic went in and beat Massimo Urbani high under the bar to put the Hounds up  1-0  after one.

Pierce Yakimchuk fired a wrister from the blueline to tie the game early in the second with his first of the season and that seemed to spark Flin Flon.

Keefe  Gruener would score his team leading fifth of the season to go along with two assists to set the tone in the third period, with Koen Senft and Ryder Ringer hitting the empty net rounding out the scoring.

Nick Beatty scored the other Notre Dame goal on the powerplay.

Massimo Urbani got the start and picked up his second SJHL win and stopped 29 out of 31 and played very well with a lot of timely saves in the third period.

Spencer Borsos also played well for Notre Dame and was quite busy finishing with 43 saves on 46 shots. I can see why the Hounds are high on Borsos who is very athletic and can be a very good goalie if the guys bare down in front of him.

Head Coach and GM of the Bombers Mike Reagan sums up last night's win. " I thought we started out a little slow , the first period we had some good shifts but wern't consistant enough. The second period I thought we were really good and the third period we were able to score some goals. Getting a powerplay goal was big for the team and we hung on for the win."

This was a big win for the Bombers who avenge the 4 to 1 setback in Yorkton the night before and improve to 3-2-1 and get today off before resuming the trip in Weyburn tomorrow.

The Wings are 0-3 but have added some players including Ethan Dekay who has spent time in the NAHL and BCHL and announced that Jerome Maharaj and Jaxson Ruthven are both returning to their team.

This makes Weyburn far more dangerous than they were to start the season and will be a good test for Flin Flon on Friday. Game time will be 8pm Manitoba time.

The Hounds fall to 0-5 and will host the winless Nipawin Hawks tonight.

Senior Kings And Queens Are Off To Roblin For Volleyball

Red Hot Terriers Take It To The Bombers

It wasn't the start to the road trip the Flin Flon Bombers were hoping for as they kicked off 4 games in 5 nights last night in Yorkton.

Flin Flon had a good first period out shooting Yorkton 10 to 6 but couldn't get a puck past Terrier netminder Ethan Farrow.

The second period was a different story as the Terriers were able to beat Kenny Marquart 4 times enroute to the 4 to 1 victory.

Evan Auld the rookie out of Calgary did most of the damage with a pair of goals for his first and second of the season. Aidan Knutson and Captain Jaron Desnoyers with his league leading 8th goal rounded out the scoring.

The lone Flin Flon  goal came from Carter Cormier who picked up his first as a Bomber when he was able to jam a puck under Ethan Farrow's pad on the powerplay.

There was a bit of a question mark about the Bomber goaltending so far this season,  but Kenny Marquart kept his team in the game last night  and made a lot of big saves without defensive support.

The Bombers also got themselves into penalty trouble but were able to kill all 7 Yorkton powerplays including a 5 on 3. Flin Flon went 1 for 5 but couldn't manufacture much 5 on 5.

Final shots were 30 to 30 with the Terriers doing a good job at keeping most of the Flin Fon shots to the outside and didn't allow the Bombers much offensive zone time.

Farrow didn't have to make a lot of tough stops while it seemed that Yorkton was on top of Marquart all night. One thing is for sure is the Terriers are for real and are now 5-0 to start the season.

The Bombers will slip to 2-2-1 and continue their road trip into Notre Dame tonight.

The Hounds are still searching for their first win of the season and are 0-4  and have been out scored 22 to 8 . Saying that,  they are always tough on the Bombers on that big ice and have to win a game sooner or later so Flin Flon better be ready to go.

Puck drop in Wilcox is 8:30pm Manitoba time.

The Blizzard went 2-1 over the weekend

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard went 2-1 this past weekend on their first road trip in the young MJHL regular season.

Starting with Friday's game against the Portage Terriers, early in the first period it was the Terrier's own Adler Johnston who put Portage on the board first, after that the game was all about the Blizz.

Not too long after the Blizz responded with a goal courtesy of Lucas De la Salle, he was assisted by  John Del Verne and  Tyler Bernier.

In the second and third period, the Blizz scored three goals and one empty netter making the final score 5-1.

Goals were scored by Marlen Edwards, Tyler Bernier, Kelton Kellerman and John  Del Verne.

The next day the Blizz traveled to Virden to play two back-to-back games against the Oil Capitals.

Bombers Trade Helary To Dauphin, Complete Future Considerations

After acquiring 2003-born Defenceman Anthony Bax in exchange for 2004-born Forward Ashton Paul and future considerations at last season’s January 10th CJHL Trade Deadline from the MJHL’s Dauphin Kings, the Bombers have completed the future considerations of the deal. 2006-born Defenceman, Daniel Helary will be heading to Dauphin to complete the trade.

Helary was signed by the Bombers this summer but had yet to appear in a game this season with the maroon and white. The 6’4, 205lbs, Calgary, Alberta product spent the previous two seasons with the Prairie Hockey Academy of the CSSHL. Daniel had a strong 2023-2024 season posting 22 points in 28 games from the blueline.

The Bombers will kick off a 4 game in 5 night road trip tonight starting in Yorkton against the 4-0 Terriers. Yorkton looks like a much improved team this year out scoring the opposition 22 to 8 in their first 4 games.

They are also ranked third in the country. Game time is 8pm, Manitoba time.

The rest of the trip will take them to Notre Dame tomorrow, Weyburn on Friday and Estevan on Saturday.  We will not be broadcasting these games on 102.9 CFAR and our next broadcast is Saturday October the 12th in Melfort.

Bombers Take 3 Out Of 4 Points Against the Wolves This Weekend

The Flin Flon Bombers wrapped up the weekend with their strongest performance this season going into Laronge and dumping the hometown Ice Wolves 5 to 2 on Saturday.

Keefe Gruener once again led the way with a pair of goals and now has a team leading 4 on the season. Newly acquired Ryder Ringor scored his second in as many games with Evin Bossel and Koen Senft rounding out the scoring.

This was Bossel's first ever SJHL goal and he had a lot of chemistry with his two 17 year old linemates in Wyatt Stinton and Leo Seitz. They were a force all night and look like they have a very bright future in junior hockey.

Laronge got their two goals from Zane Normand and David Vitt.

Massimo Urbani picked up his first SJHL win and only had to make 12 saves as the Bombers dominated the Wolves all night and held them to just 2 shots in the third period.

Logan Falk was much busier and stopped 41 and suffered the loss after stopping 39 out of 42 the night before in the Laronge OT victory.

This was a big improvement from the night earlier where Laronge was able to knock off Flin Flon 4 to 3 in OT Friday in a game which the Bombers turned the puck over steady in their own zone.

Mike Reagan commented on the CFAR Post Game Show Saturday that they watched video and had some meetings with players before boarding the bus , and they were all on the same page and knew they had to play much better.

This was one of the most dominant efforts I have seen from the Bombers in Laronge as they took it to  the Wolves for the entire game,  and did an outstanding job blocking shots and throwing the body which was something I never saw from them in their first three games.

This also gave the team some much needed momentum for their Southern Swing which will start tomorrow in Yorkton against a very strong Terriers team.

After the weekend Yorkton is a perfect 4-0 and have out scored their opponents 22 to 8 and look to be a much improved team this year playing with a lot of confidence.

Flin Flon beat the Terriers in all 6 meetings last year, but a lot of the games were close with Yorkton holding leads in many of those games but couldn't find a way to finish.

It looks like a lot different Yorkton club this year and it should be a very interesting game tomorrow night.

Flin Flon improves to 2-1-1 after the weekend and trail the defending league champion Melfort Mustangs by 3 points for first in the division.

We won't be broadcasting any games from the road trip and our next broadcast is Saturday October the 12th from Melfort.

Kings And Queens Come Up Short In Thompson

The Senior Hapnot Kings and Queens travelled down to Thompson this past weekend to defend their Zone titles in soccer.

The Queens were 2-0 in their pool beating Norway House 13 to 0 and MBCI out of the Pas 4 to 0.

That put them in the final against OCN and the Queens  lost that game 2 to 0 against a very physical OCN team which put an end to multiple Zone titles from the Hapnot Girl's team.

The Queens may still get a chance to go to Provincials as they have applied for a Wild Card and if they get picked they will get a chance to go.

The Kings went 1-1 losing their first game to Moose Lake 1 to 0 before rebounding with a 1 to 0 win over Cross Lake.

This got the Hapnot Boy's team to the finals and they lost to an experienced Thompson team 3 to 0.

Thompson and Cross Lake will now head down to Minnedosa for Provincials starting this weekend.
