Queens Are Soccer Zone Champions

The Hapnot Senior Queens Soccer Team has captured the Zone Championship for Girl's Soccer in the North.

The Queens went undefeated and beat RD Parker out of Thompson in the final earlier today by a score of 1-0. Teslynn Beauchamp scored the games only goal.

The Queens will win the Zone banner for the third time in the last four years and are now off to Provincials in Stonewall the weekend of October the 11th to the 13th.

The Hapnot Kings had a good tournament but came up short in their final today, dropping a 6 to 1 decision to RD Parker.

It was an impressive showing for the Kings who had no tune up games and tournament experience before heading to Zones on the weekend and made it to the finals finishing second in the North.

Kings And Queens Are Into Play-Off Rounds For Soccer Zones

A  good showing so far for both the Hapnot Kings and Queens Soccer teams who are at Zones at OCN.

The Queens won both their round robin games over RD Parker of Thompson 2-1 and Cross Lake 1 to 0.

The Queens then beat MBCI out of The Pas  3 to 0 in the semi's  and are in the final at noon today against the host team from OCN.

The Kings went 2-1 in the round robin, losing to RD Parker 4 -2 but rebounding with a convincing 10 to 1 win over Norway House and a 1-0 win over Cross Lake.

Hapnot is in the final against RD Parker out of Thompson and that game is just under way.

You can follow the results at mhsaa.ca.

Bombers Continue To Roll

Another good weekend for the Flin Flon Bombers who picked up a pair of wins over Division rivals the Nipawin Hawks and Melfort Mustangs.

On Friday the Maroon and White Express made their way to the Cage in Nipawin for the Hawks home opener and played a complete 60 minites  and were able to pick up the 4 to 1 victory.

Nathan Lalumiere did most of the damage picking up his first ever SJHL hat-trick and he scored all three goals different ways including short handed, a power play marker and even strength.

The other  Bomber goal came from local product Wyatt Stinton who scored a powerplay goal late in the game for his second of the season.

The lone Nipawin goal was scored by Ashton Tait who took advantage of a Bomber give away in their zone.

Flin Flon played a great road game and held the Hawks to 22 shots including only 2 in the second period. Another key was killing a 5 on 3 early in the first period and were 5 for 6 on the PK while going 2 for 11 with the extra attacker.

The Bombers rode the momentum into Saturday as they welcomed the defending league champion Melfort Mustangs to town for the first time this season.

It was a lot different game than the Bombers had seen or played so far this year, a tight checking affair with not a lot of room for the Bomber's to orchestrate their skill and speed.

This is a lot different Mustang team that doesn't feature a lot of high skilled forwards, so they play a tight defensive grind it out style.

Flin Flon were able to persevere and pulled out the 2 to 1 shoot out victory.

Wyatt Stinton scored the only goal in regulation, his second powerplay goal in as many nights taking advantage of a 5 minute major early in the second period. Veteran defenseman Bo Eisner scored for the Mustangs.

The two goaltenders stood tall and kept each other's scorers at bay through the rest of regulation and OT.

After the Mustangs scored first in the shoot-out , local products Wyatt Stinton and Joey Lies both found the back of the net to send Flin Flon to the victory to the delight of the great crowd at the Whitney Forum.

Devin Peck was strong behind the pipes again for the Bombers earning his fourth win of the season with 21 saves and 42 total in the two games this past weekend.

Not to be out done was Mustang goalie Kason Kobelka who ended up with 37 saves on 38 shots.

A great start for the Bombers who remain undefeated on the season at 4-0 and will now prepare for the Warman Wolverines who make their way up North this up coming weekend.

The former Notre Dame Hounds franchise is 1-4 on the season and have just acquired former Blizzard standout goalie Taye Timmerman who was reassigned by  the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL.

Games will be Friday and Saturday with Saturday's game being broadcast on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com.

Bombers Make Roster Addition

The Flin Flon Bombers have added a player with Major Junior hockey experience just in time for their game with the Nipawin Hawks  tonight.

The Bombers are pleased to announce that they have added 19 year old forward Jack Martin from the Barrie Colts of the OHL.

Martin suited up for 21 games for Barrie last season and added one assist in those games.

Flin Flon is excited to add Martin's experience to their forward group and should be a welcome addition.

The Bombers will board the bus and head to Nipawin for a key UPL  divisional matchup with both teams undefeated so far this season.

Flin Flon took both games in a home and home with Laronge last weekend by scores of 9 to 4 and 5 to 1 while Nipawin spoiled the party in Melfort knocking off the defending league Champion Mustangs 4 to 3.

You can listen to tonight's game from Nipawin on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononlinecom which will be the Hawks home opener. It all begins with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 7:40 and drop of the puck at 8pm, Manitoba time.

We will also have tomorrow night's game at the Whitney Forum as the Bombers will host the Melfort Mustangs at 7:30. Tomorrow night’s  game is at 7:30 which means we are on the air at 7:10.

Kodiaks Ready For The Challenge

The Creighton Kodiaks 6 Man Football team will head out on the road for the final time this season.

Creighton will put their 0-2 record on the line as they head to Wakaw to take on one of the strongest programs in the province.

Wakaw is the defending Division Champs and they finished second in the Province last year.

The Warriors are a powerhouse again this season and are sitting with a 2-0 record. The Kodiaks have been under manned and have had the injuries pile up the first two games and hope  to get a few more of their starters back in uniform this afternoon.

The good news for Creighton is after today's game in Wakaw, the Kodiaks will play the next three games at home.

Kickoff is at 3pm Sask time, and you can follow today's results on the Creighton Kodiak facebook page.

They will play three games on Sunday, RD Parker at 1, Norway House at 3:30 and Cross Lake at 6:30pm.

Two JV girls’ teams from MBCI, along with OLC’s JV girls, travelled to Thompson to compete in R.D. Parker Collegiate’s Northern Lights Tournament. In the JV girls’ final, the Hapnot Kopper Kweens defeated the Grand Rapids Wolverines, while the JV boys’ final saw the R.D. Meanwhile, MBCI’s JV boys were in Brandon for the Brandon University JV Boys Tournament. After round-robin and playoff action, the boys finished in fourth place out of thirteen teams.

Lastly, MBCI’s SV girls made the short trip to Creighton Community School, where they captured the Kodiak Border Battle title to kick off their season.

Bombers Start The Season 2-0

It was a good start to the new SJHL season for the Flin Flon Bombers who knocked off the Laronge Ice Wolves in both games in the home and home this past weekend.

In front of a packed house at the Whitney Forum, the Bombers buried the Wolves 9 to 4 on Friday night.

New comer Ryan Ulmer score just 1:36 into the opening period and the Bombers went into cruize control.

Flin Flon got goals from 9 different scorers including Xavier Fachon, Landon Alexander, Ryder Mucha, Reid Arberry, Leo Seitz, Joey Lies, Wyatt Stinton and Benett Leibel.

Devin Peck started his first regular season game in the SJHL and collected the win for the Bombers making 21 saves on 25 shots. The Bombers managed to get 9 pucks past veteran Graham Brown on 52 shots.

Specialty teams were also a factor in the outcome with Flin Flon going 2 for 4 on the powerplay and Laronge ended up 0 for 5.

The next night the Bombers travelled to Laronge to play the first ever regular season game at the Wolves new home, the Jonas Roberts Memorial Centre.

This is a beautiful facility that should do the Wolves proud for many years to come.

Once again the Bombers started quickly  with Ryder Mucha re-directing a shot past Riley Zezel who got the start on Saturday night.

Queens Finish Third In Elton

It was a good start for the Senior Hapnot Queens Volleyball team who took part in their first tournament of the year this past weekend in Elton.

The Queens started with a win over Grandview, a loss to Carberry and then  a win over Goose Lake to finish first in their pool.

That would advance them to the playoff round where they beat Major Pratt out of Russell before losing to Carberry once again in the semi finals. The Queens would then play the host team from Elton for third place and they ended up winning in two straight sets.

The JV Hapnot Queens were in Thompson this past weekend and they went 12-0 and ended up winning that tournament.

Under Manned Kodiaks Start Season 0-2

It has been a rough start for the Creighton Kodiaks 6 man Football Team.

The Kodiaks had a short bench yesterday as they made their way to Shellbrook to battle the Ardvarks and dropped a 60 to 13 decision and are 0-2 to start the season.

Creighton only had 13 players dressed and Deakon Anaka led the way with two touchdowns. Brayden Church made his first start at quarterback and played very well and was able to move the ball.

Unfortunately penalties also hurt the Kodiaks with two touchdowns being called back on penalties.

Fatigue set in towards the second half and Shellbrook was able to wear the Kodiaks down and picked up the victory.

Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk says despite  the tough start they are trying to remain optimistic. " We know going into Wakaw next week we are in extremely tough with the guys we have. We are hoping to have PK and Quinton  back, and hopefully there is   some light at the end of the tunnel  with the injuries we have. The goal is to get our full lineup back and have a really good home game on our new field with our fans. We will go to Wakaw next week and try to build on some of our positives. We then get to return home and make it tough on some of these teams when they come North."

The Kodiaks will finish on the road in Wakaw next Thursday and will get to finish out the regular season with three straight games at home.

The home opener against Hague will go Thursday October the 2nd at the Creighton Field with kickoff at 4pm, MB time.

Creighton Hosting Border Battle Volleyball Tournament

The Senior Creighton Kodiak Girls will be hosting the Senior Kodiak Border Battle Volleyball Tournament starting later today.

Besides the host Kodiaks,  there will be teams from Cranberry, Laronge, The Pas and Snow Lake.

Action starts this afternoon with the host Kodiaks playing Frontier out of Cranberry at 3pm.Round robin will continue throughout Friday and Saturday at the Creighton Gym.

Playoffs start Saturday at 12:20 with the final at 4:20pm. You can see the full schedule  on the Creighton School facebook page.

Bombers Host Laronge As SJHL Regular Season Begins Tonight

There is a lot of excitement  in hockey rinks right across Saskatchewan and you can include the Whitney Forum in the mix.

The Flin Flon Bombers will host the Laronge Ice Wolves in their home opener as a brand new SJHL season will begin tonight.

Despite losing a lot of marquee players from last season,  there is a lot of optimism in Bomber country who bring back 12 players from last year's team.

Flin Flon looks to be very good on the back end with the return of Pierce Yakimchuk, Natan Meunier, Nash Holmes, Emerson Clark and Kyle Marsden. Marsden will not be in uniform tonight due to injury.

All 5 looked great in camp and look forward to leading this group throughout the season.

The Bombers also bring back a good compliment of forwards including local products Joey Lies, preparing for his fourth season , Wyatt Stinton and Ryder Mucha.

This will be the second season for Stinton and Mucha who look to be poised to become elite players this year. Mucha scored 8 goals in the pre season and has a very deceptive shot and knows how to get to the net.

Stinton picked up three goals in the pre season and can really fly down the ice and doesn't mind playing physical when he has to.

Lies is also coming off a productive pre season which saw him score 4 goals in his last two pre-season games. Look for Lies to have his best offensive season as he gets ready for his last year of Junior Hockey.

Flin Flon will also bring back Leo Seitz, Reid Arberry, Rhett Ewen and Landon Alexander who can all play two way games and will bring a physical presence to the lineup.

The Bombers do not have a returning goalie with both tenders moving on from last year and it looks like 20 year old Devin Peck will be the opening night starter. The 20 year old from Colorado Springs  arrived a few days after Main Camp and only gave up one goal in two pre-season starts and looks to be pretty solid.

Laronge looks to start the season with a younger lineup with only 8 players returning from last year but one of them looks to make a big impact.

Starting goalie Graham Brown is back and he was one of the league's best tenders down the stretch last year and was one of the big reasons the Wolves only missed the playoffs by a single point.

Brown plays the Bombers well and he will be tough to beat tonight.

Don't forget to get to the rink early for the Northland Ford Tailgate Party which kicks off in the Whitney Forum Parking Lot at 5pm. There will be free hotdogs and drinks, music from Amisk Sounds, a Beer Garden and free Glow Sticks for the first 300 fans.

You will be able to catch both games between the Bombers and Wolves this weekend including the home opener tonight beginning with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 7:10 and drop of the puck at 7:30.

We will also have the rematch tomorrow from the Ice Wolves new home the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre with the Great North GM Coach's Show at 8:10 and drop of the puck 8:30 MB time.

Kodiaks Are Off To Hague

Good luck to the Creighton Kodiaks 6 man football team who are off to Shellbrook for their second game of the season.

The Kodiaks dropped their first game in Hague last week by a score of 74 to 60,  but were still happy with their game.

Creighton had to battle the heat and were undermanned with only 15 players available for their first game, with many playing both offense and defense and they simply ran out of gas.

The Kodiaks hope to have a few more bodies for today in what will be a crucial game in the standings. Shellbrook dropped their opening game to powerhouse Wakaw, so they are also 0-1.

Kickoff in Shellbrook today is 3pm Sask time.

Hapnot Queens Flying High In Swan River

It was a very good weekend for the Hapnot Queens Soccer Team who competed in their first tournament of the year.

The Queens went down to Swan River and went undefeated and didn't give up a single goal.

Hapnot beat Dauphin in their first game 1 to 0 with the only  goal scored by Mia Desjarlais, this was Mia's first goal as a Queen.

The Queens then went on to blank Swan Valley 3-0 and RD Parker out of Thompson 4 to 0.

This was a great tune up for Zones which will take place in OCN at the end of the month. Both the Hapnot Queens and Kings will be represented.

The Queens will head to OCN today  to play a friendly game and get a little more preparation.

Bombers Wrap Up Pre Season With Another Convincing Win

Another impressive display by the Flin Flon Bombers who wrapped up the pre season Friday,  with another dominating victory taking down the Northern Manitoba Blizzard 9 to 0.

Local product Joes Lies had another strong game where he scored a pair of goals and added two assists for a four point game.

Leo Seitz also added a pair with the other goals coming from Natan Munier Roberge, Rhett Ewen, Hudson Brehaut, Nathan Lalumiere and Nash Holmes.

Devin Peck from Colorado Springs got the start and looked very steady in stopping all 30 shots fired in his direction.

The Blizzard went with the tandem of Tysen Endall who played the first period and stopped 8 of 13 before making way for Kevin Podgurny,  who did everything he could to keep his team in the game with 27 saves on 31 shots.

Flin Flon will wrap up the season with a perfect 7-0 record out scoring the opposition 49 to 16 and hit the regular season brimming with confidence.

It all starts this weekend with the Bombers tangling with the Laronge Ice Wolves in a home and home to start the brand new season. Flin Flon will host Laronge on Friday at the Whitney Forum before heading to Laronge on Saturday.

Don't forget to get their early on Friday for the Northland Ford Tailgate party for free hotdogs and drinks. Both games will also be broadcast on 102.9 CFAR and flinflononline.com with the Great North GM Coach's Show, 15 minutes before puck drop both nights.

Northern Manitoba Blizzard Make Big Moves Ahead of September 27th Opener

After wrapping up their preseason schedule this past weekend, the Northern Manitoba Blizzard now have their sights set on their September 27th regular season opener against the Selkirk Steelers.

In other Blizzard news, head coach and general manager Ty Valin was active on the trade front, making several moves to bolster the roster ahead of the regular season.

On September 10th, the Blizz traded two PDFs in exchange for Humboldt Broncos defenceman Erik Stelbasky and La Ronge forward Owen Wilkinson. The following day, on September 11th, a blockbuster trade went down between the Niverville Nighthawks and the Blizzard. The Blizz dealt defenceman Aaron Krestanowich and forward Tyler Bernier in exchange for forwards Lane Apperley and Kanye Huang, along with a PDF.

Additionally, forward Louis-Jacob Beauregard was traded to the Edmundston Blizzard of the MHL in return for a PDF.

Kodiaks Drop Season Opener In Hague

The Creighton Kodiaks travelled down to Hague yesterday to kick off another 6 man football season.

The game was originally supposed to take place in Creighton but due to field conditions the game had to change venues.

Despite being under manned and having to battle the heat,  the Kodiaks played well but came up on the wrong end of a 74 to 60 score.

Matthew Lavis had a good afternoon as we was able to hall in four touchdown catches.  Peyton Pelletier who started his first ever game at quarterback due to injury , threw four touchdown passes and ran in another two.

Other touchdowns came from D. Anaka who scored a pair including a 95 yard kickoff return. Brayden Church played his first ever game and was a beast on defense and  led the way with two interceptions.

Head Coach Ryan Karakochuk summed up yesterday's game. " I felt pretty confident going into yesterday's game,  and the first drive we get an interception from Brayden Church playing his first ever game.  We get the ball and bang we lose our starting quarterback with a severe ankle injury and it brought everyone down. We did get a touchdown soon after he left to give us a boost. The bottom line is deep in my heart I thought we were the better team , I just thought our depth wasn't there and we just ran out of gas."

The Kodiaks will now get back to practise and try and get some more bodies in the lineup, as they head back on the road to Shellbrook next Thursday September the 18th.

Shellbrook lost their first game to Wakaw so this game could have huge playoff implications. Kickoff will be at 3pm Sask time.

Bombers Bury The Stampeders

The Flin Flon Bombers spotted the MJHL'S  Swan Valley Stampeders the first goal last night , but found their offense soon after and  rolled to a convincing 11 to 2 win  at the Whitney Forum.

Bombers Put Up Ten In Impressive Pre Season Win

After a slow start yesterday afternoon, the Flin Flon Bombers found their stride and powered to another pre-season win at the Whitney Forum, beating the Laronge Ice Wolves 10 to 4.

Flin Flon faced Laronge for the second time in the pre-season and spotted the Wolves two quick goals.

Laronge scored a couple of fluky goals, six minutes into the opening period courtesy of David Vitt and Grayden Perozni and seemed to have the Bombers back on their heels.

Flin Flon shook that off and got on track courtesy of Nathan Lalumiere who ended up scoring four goals to go along with one assist for a 5 point game and Pierce Yakimchuk had a game for the ages.

Yakimchuk, who looked very confident at training camp is having a very impressive pre-season that included a natural hat-trick in the second period and he looks very determined and ready for his 20 year old season.

Ryder Mucha continues to be impressive with two goals yesterday to give him 8 in the last three games.  The other Bomber goal came from new comer Xavier Fachon.

20 year old local product Joey Lies picked up 3 assists and has 6 points in the last two games.

The Bombers have picked up 19 year old goaltender Brayden Burrows who comes out of BC  and he made his debut yesterday stopping 16 out of 20 shots.

The Blizzard got their goals from Daylin Monias who played for the Norman Northstars last season and Lucas Lorenz out of Grand Prairie.

Cranberry's Logan Grenier started for the Blizzard and stopped 25 out of 27 shots before making way for Kevin Podgurny who stopped 20 out of 22.
