The Flin Flon Bombers kicked off 2026 just like they wrapped up 2025, with a couple of impressive victories over their division rivals the Melfort Mustangs.
After a 12 day break, the Bombers began the new year on Friday welcoming Melfort to the Whitney Forum.
Local product, Ryder Mucha who missed a chunk of games heading into the Christmas break due to a sickness, was in fine form and spotted his team a couple of first period goals.
Mucha was able to beat Mustang netminder Madden Mulawka five hole when he got his stick caught on the side of the net. Mucha would then collect a powerplay goal just a few minutes later when he grabbed his own rebound, to give him 9 goals on the season.
With a 2 to 0 lead entering the second period, the Bombers hit their stride and scored three more goals courtesy of Maverick Deslilse, a short handed goal from Rhett Ewen and Jared Miskiw scored his first ever SJHL goal.
Flin Flon cruised to the 5 to 1 victory.
Logan Peskett scored the lone goal for Melfort on the powerplay who were outshot 32 to 26.
Devin Peck got the start in goal and was very good when he needed to be making 25 saves for his 13th win of the season. That is second best in the league for wins for a goalie, only the Nipawin Hawks Gage Roberts has more wins with 15.
Madden Mulawka suffered the loss giving up 5 goals on 32 shots. Specialty teams were huge with the Bombers going 1 for 3 on the powerplay and they also killed 4 of 5 Melfort powerplays, including a 5 minute major to Wyatt Stinton late in the game.
Saturday the venue would switch to the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.
Both goaltenders were marvelous and put on a goaltending clinic as only one goal was scored in the entire game.
Just past the midway point of the second period, the Bombers Pierce Yakimchuk received a beautiful saucer pass from Maverick Deslilse and went in and beat Mustang goalie Kason Kobelka with a nice wrist shot over his left shoulder. This was Yakimchuk’s fourth goal of the season and stood up as the game winner as both goalies did the rest.
Flin Flon’s Finn Werner was dialled in and he ended up stopping all 36 shots fired in his direction for his 6th win of the season. Kason Kobelka was just as good in the Melfort net and surrendered just the one goal on 35 shots.
Both teams failed to get any production on the powerplay and combined were 0 for 10 with the extra attacker.
This was a very gutsy and impressive win for the Bombers who pulled off the win on the road with 9 regulars out of their lineup. Flin Flon was missing Joey Lies, Reid Arberry and Sam Ward who suited up for the SJHL at the Viking Cup.
The Bombers were also missing Rhett Ewen, Nathan Lalumiere, Nash Holmes, Keith Marsden and Ryder Mucha who were out with injuries. Wyatt Stinton was suspended for the game for a kneeing penalty the night before.
Head Coach and GM, Mike Reagan was quick to compliment his team after the win on Saturday night. “ Unbelievable effort , just really gutsy and I am real proud of our guys who found a way. I think wins like this really bring a team together and build character. This is how you have to win in the playoffs and you have to find ways. With 9 regulars out of the lineup you are essentially missing your whole team, but we found a way to get it done.”
With the two wins over the Mustangs on the weekend, the Bombers solidify their hold on first place overall at 23-9-0-1, which is 3 points up on second place Weyburn and 6 points up on the third place Nipawin Hawks.
Flin Flon returns to the ice this week with a pair of games against another divisional foe in the Laronge Ice Wolves. Laronge comes to Flin Flon on Wednesday with the Bombers returning the favour and heading to Laronge on Friday.
Congratulations to the Bombers Joey Lies, Reid Arberry and Sam Ward on being part of team SJHL who won the Gold Medal on the weekend at the Viking Cup in Camrose.
The SJHL won the Gold Medal in exciting fashion with a 5 to 4 OT win on Saturday night over the Sait Trojans in the final. The Yorkton Terriers Tylan Henrickson tied the game with just 14 seconds left in regulation and former Flin Flon Bomber Ethan Andrews scored the OT winner.
I also wanted to send condolences to the family of Evan Hammond who tragically passed away a few days ago. Evan was the voice of the Port Alberni Bulldogs of the BCHL for the last several years and made a big impact for the team he was covering as well as the entire league.
Evan grew up in Flin Flon and started his broadcasting career while he was still in high school at CFAR. He would get the opportunity to go do play by play for the OCN Blizzard of the MJHL and was with them for four of their league championships and was an integral part of their club and history. In the early 2000’s he would make his way to BC to broadcast Bulldog games and forever cemented his legacy.
He was a larger than life character, who loved his family, his community and hockey. He was always smiling and made others smile as well.
RIP Hammer. You will be greatly missed.
