Flin Flon is getting ready to celebrate their Centennial to recognize 100 years as a community in Northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan  in 2027.

The Flin Flon Bombers have been an intricate part in the community for those 100 years from generations of players to volunteers, local fans, sponsors, billet parents and Bomber Board members.

A lot of events are being planned to celebrate this incredible milestone.

Some events will take place this year including the Home Opener Weekend taking place on September the 25th and 26th. That will include the home opener on Friday against Laronge with the Bomber Alumni game and SJHL Hall Of Fame ceremony on Saturday.

The organization will be holding the Bomber Bash in the Summer of 2027, which will be Saturday July the 3rd which will include a Ball Hockey Tournament, live music  and more at Creekside Park.

The Bombers will also be involved in the 100 Year Celebration Weekend which will include a meet and greet with special guests. There will also be a social with live entertainment and an Alumni Golf Tournament.

The Northern Way Sports Charity Golf Tournament will once again kick off Connor Dewar's Hockey Camp week on Monday, August 10.

Halcrow Lake Golf & Country Club will once again play host to the exciting event. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., with a shotgun start scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

The tournament will also feature a delicious dinner, presentations, and great prizes. To register for this 18+ event, stop by the clubhouse or call 204-627-2300.

One of the most popular tournaments of the local golf season will be the annual Senior's Open coming up on Wednesday August the 12th.

It kicks off with a shotgun start at 9am.

It is $60.00 for members and $100.00 for non members which includes 18 holes of golf, dinner and prizes.

Hockey Canada made it official today that Fort McMurray Alberta will be the host of the 2027 Centennial Cup.

The Centennial Cup, presented by Tim Hortons, Canada’s National Junior A Championship, returns to Fort McMurray from May 6-16. The tournament was previously held in the city in 2000, when the host Oil Barons captured their lone national title on home ice. Overall, it will mark the seventh time Alberta has welcomed the best Junior A teams in the country.

This past year the tournament was hosted in Summerside PEI, and the Flin Flon Bombers represented the SJHL at the ten team tournament after winning their first league title in 33 years.

Flin Flon went 2-2 in the round robin and failed to make the playoff round.

The Tournament was won by the MJHL'S Niverville Night Hawks who went undefeated in the tournament,  including a 4 to 1 win over the host team, the Summerside West Capitals 4 to 1 in the Championship final.

The Legion is asking everyone to save the date! This September, the branch will be hosting a fun golf day at the Halcrow Lake Golf & Country Club.

The event will also feature a putting contest and a $10,000 hole-in-one challenge. Be sure to stay tuned for more details by joining the branch's official Facebook group.

In other Legion news, the branch will be hosting a Sports Day next month at the Kinsmen Ball Diamond, located at the end of Crossley Avenue. The day will feature disc golf, cornhole, bocce ball, and much more.

Another August long weekend is upon us and that means the return of the historic Roller Goodwin Hockey Tournament starting this Friday at the Whitney Forum.

14 teams are ready to go including Team Simon, Beer Up, Firemen, The Dump Bears, Team Chudy, Team Donaghy, Kro's Pros, Team McKenzie, Team Crone, Westwood Moose, Team Beauchamp, The Doughboys, Team Rideout and Team Quinn.

Action kicks off  this Friday with Team Simon hooking up with Beer Up at 3pm and the Firemen against the Dump Bears at 4:30pm and Team Chudy against Team Donaghy at 6pm.

One of the highlights of the weekend will be the Social on Sunday night at the Flin Flon Community Hall featuring the ban On Alert.

Cocktails at 6 and dinner at 6:30, with the Social starting at 9pm.

Cranberry Portage is getting ready to host a Beach Volleyball Tournament this weekend to coincide with the 35th annual Cranberry Trout Challenge.

It will take place this Saturday and Sunday on Lake Athapap with the registration deadline this Friday at 8pm.

There will be an $80.00 entry fee and teams must have 4 players including two males and two females. Tournament format will be based on the number of teams that enter.

With the Flin Flon Minor Hockey season just a little more than a  month away, they are still in need of some Rep Coach's for the up coming season.

They still need to find Coach's for the U-11 Northland Ford Bombers, U-13 Kinsmen Bombers, U-15 Werbicki Trucking Bombers, U-11 Female Bombers and U-13 Female Bombers.

Congratulations to Flin Flon Minor Hockey's Adam Ricard on receiving a volunteer award from the  Norman Minor Hockey Association.

Ricard was the Tournament Coordinator for both the 2025 U-11 A and 2026 U-13 B Hockey Provincials.

Adam was very instrumental in the success of both these events on and off the ice and has been an intricate part of the Flin Flon Minor Hockey Board of Directors for many years.

Ricard also continues to work hard for the Flin Flon Bomber Board of Directors and has also been involved with their association in lots of different capacities.  

August is upon us and that means another busy month at the Phantom Lake Golf Club.

It all begins with the YZ Tournament on Sunday August the 2nd.

The Mike Jones Tournament will take place the following Sunday August the 9th, followed by Junior Lessons on the 10th,  the Senior Tournament on the 12th, USW Tournament on the 15th and 22nd.

The Flin Flon Fire Department will have their Tournament on the 23rd, Followed by the Bergman Tournament on the 29th and Flin Flon Credit Union Tournament on the 30th.

There will also be the weekly events including Ladies and Men's Night and the Senior Ladies and Men's Mingle.

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard are calling for potential billets to sign up and help out during training camp and the regular season. This very rewarding opportunity also comes with its own unique perks. In other Blizz news, another trade occurred last week between the Northern Manitoba Blizzard and the Winnipeg Blues. The Blizz traded forward Kayne Pawlick and a Player Development Fee to the Blues in exchange for netminder Kannen Kirkwood, a 2007-born goaltender from Calgary, AB. This marks yet another move by Northern Manitoba as they continue to bolster their roster ahead of the upcoming season.

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard wants hockey families to know there are still spots available in its U7/U9 Hockey School.

The camp will take place late next month and offers a fun opportunity for young players to get a head start on the upcoming hockey season while developing their skills on the ice.

U-15 Norman Northstar try-outs are going to be taking place on August the 22nd and 23rd at the C.A Nesbit Arena in Thompson.

Try-outs are for any players in Northern Manitoba born in 2012 and 2013.

The Northstars play in the Winnipeg AAA League.

The Norman Northstars’ annual two-week conditioning camp is back and open to the U15 age group.

This year’s camp is perfectly timed, taking place the week before and the week after the U15 AAA tryouts—making it an excellent opportunity for U15 players preparing for tryouts to get on the ice, sharpen their skills, and stay game-ready.

Former U18 Head Coach Justin Valentino will be leading the on-ice sessions, while Tyler Davis will be running dedicated goalie sessions.

Whether you’re looking to get some extra reps in before tryouts, stay sharp afterward, or attend both weeks, this camp is a great opportunity for any player planning to try out for the U15 AAA team.

Cranberry Portage is preparing for their 35th annual Trout Challenge once again happening on July 31st to August the 2nd.

Besides the fishing,  there are lots of other events to enjoy for the whole family.

The weekend will kick off with the Boat Parade on Friday night starting at 7pm followed by the Penny Parade happening at the Curling Rink.

Saturday and Sunday, August the 1st and 2nd there will be lots of other events including kids games, a casting contest, horseshoe and cribbage tournament all hosted by the MMF.

There will also be the Artisan Market at the Cranberry Museum on Saturday, Beach Volleyball Tournament, Beer Garden and Creighton's Pizza will supply the Food Vendor.

The Pas Minor Hockey is offering a great incentive for hockey families across the tri-community.

Parents who register their players between now and August 1 will save $100 on player registration fees. The organization is encouraging anyone planning to register one or more players to sign up as soon as possible to take advantage of the discount.

Congratulations to two UM alum, Desiree Scott  and Christina Litz  for inspiring the next generation of women's soccer players in Canada. The two are bringing a Northern Super League franchise team to Winnipeg which will start playing next fall.

Desiree Scott is an Olympic gold medalist who played on the UM Bisons soccer team between 2005 and 2009. Christina Litz is the President of Canada's first women's pro soccer league, the Northern Super League.

This will be the league's 7th franchise and the Winnipeg team  have not officially come up with a team name, crest or home facility as of yet.

Soccer is really on the rise in Canada and is the most played youth sport in the country.

This is  exciting news for both Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba to add another Professional Sports team to Western Canada.

A co-ed 6-and-4 slo-pitch tournament will once again be held during this year's Opaskwayak Indigenous Days.

The tournament begins on August 14, with games being played at one of the three main ball diamonds throughout the tri-community.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top teams in both the A-side and B-side championship finals. The $500 entry fee must be paid at the OCN Payment Centre by Wednesday, August 5, for teams to be eligible to participate. All teams must also register through slo-pitch.com and submit a signed waiver.

All prizes are guaranteed, and individual awards will also be presented to the tournament's standout players.

The Rink Hockey Academy will be holding a 4 day clinic in Flin Flon at the Whitney Forum on August the 10th to the 13th.

This event is sponsored by Flin Flon Minor Hockey and includes the age groups U-7, U-9,U-11,U-13 and U-15-18.

The camp is tailored to focus on individual skills which are common in today's game and then the opportunity to showcase these skills in game like situations.

Each age group will include 16 players and 3 goalies and is open to all FFMH players first. Every player that registers will receive a Rink hockey jersey.

It's another busy week in The Pas Slo-Pitch League, with a full slate of games on tap.

Tonight, the Agents will play back-to-back games against the Fireballz and Tugeyes at the Arena 1 baseball diamond.

Meanwhile, Centennial Field will host a doubleheader. At 6:30 p.m., the Big Ol' Hitties will take on the Digmor Crushers, followed by the Mall Rats facing  team Balls Deep.

The lone game at Kinsmen Field will feature the Young Guns going head-to-head with Pitch Slap.

We are less than 2 months away from the start of another SJHL hockey season and the defending league Champion Flin Flon Bombers have announced their Pre- Season schedule.

They are looking for  passionate, knowledgeable, and dedicated individuals with an officiating background who are interested in helping educate and develop officials throughout Manitoba during the upcoming season.

Whether you have previous instructional experience or are looking to become more involved in the development program, Hockey Manitoba would like you to apply.

Officials and facilitators play a vital role in the growth of the  officiating program by: Delivering clinics, mentoring new and returning officials, and Helping create a positive learning environment for officials at all levels.

Former Blizzard player Jordin Tootoo is returning to The Tri Community for an autograph and book signing this Saturday at Twin Motors.

Jordin played a full season for the Blizzard from 1998-1999, leaving a lasting impact both on and off the ice.

He then played for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 1999 to 2003. He was then drafted by the Nashville Predators in the NHL, where he played 723 games across a 13-season career. Jordin was the first player of Inuit descent to play in the NHL.

He has authored two books and has become an advocate for mental health and Indigenous youth. Fans are encouraged to bring their copy of one of his books, their favorite jersey, puck, or memorabilia to be autographed by Jordin.

Northern Manitoba's longest running hockey school will return to the Whitney Forum in August.

The Extreme Hockey School will run from August 24th to 27th, with Specialty Clinics held August 30th to September 1st.

Mike Reagan,  the Head Coach and GM of the Flin Flon Bombers,  returns as the Head Instructor and  will be joined by Assistant Coach Tyler Szturm as well as many players from past and present.

More tournaments are being added to the already jam-packed Big Eddy Sports Days weekend.

A seven-on-seven youth soccer tournament has now been added to the lineup for kids and teens across the tri-community. The tournament will feature four divisions: U9, U11, U13 and U15.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place teams in each division. The entry fee is $200 per team.

The Big Eddy Sports Days weekend just keeps getting bigger.

The Big Eddy Sports Days Facebook group announced the addition of a 35-and-over men's soccer tournament to the already busy slate of events. Games will be played on OCN and Fisher Island.

There is no entry fee to register a team, but all participants must wear a Big Eddy Sports Days bracelet to be eligible to play. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place teams.

It will once again take place on beautiful Lake Athapap on August the 1st and 2nd and there will be a chance to land a lot of big prizes.

First Place will be $65,00.00, Second Place is $3,250.00 and Third Place $25,00.00.

There is also Female and Youth Angler Awards.

This is a catch and release derby and there is a $200.00 entry fee with two people per boat.

The Big Eddy Sports Days Committee is back at it with not one, not two, but three 3-on-3 basketball tournaments.

Games will tip off on July 24 and run through July 27. They will be played at either Oscar Lathlin Collegiate or Joe A. Ross School.

The deadline to register a team is July 17. Entry fees can be paid at the Otineka Mall Payment Center.

There are two important rules for this year's tournaments. First, teams competing in the coed youth tournament must have a five-player roster that includes at least two girls. Second, all participants in the women's and men's tournaments must wear their $5 tournament bracelet throughout the duration of the tournament.

Registration is still open for several Northern Manitoba hockey teams, including the U13 AA Norman Northstars, U15 Norman Northstars, and U18 Norman Northstars.

Among the highlights was the Bombers paying tribute to three long time serving Board Members.

The Bombers want to thank Alison Cooper, Janice Slipp and Jordy Dumenko for all of their hard work and dedication in a variety of capacities the last several years.

All three of these individuals went above and beyond their duties as Vice President, Treasurer and Director and will be missed at meetings.

The good news is all three of these former Board  Members will be involved with the Bomber Organization in other capacities.

We live in a changing Canada with growing communities who have strong soccer traditions and are helping grow the sport nation wide.

There are lots of programs available including lots of youth leagues and grass roots development everywhere  including Northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The World Cup was also very successful especially with the success of the Men's National team and is inspiring more kids to start taking up the game.

No question that soccer has never been more popular in Canada then it is right now.

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard ran their two day July development camp recently in Winnipeg. The camp included some returning players and several new players joining the lineup for this year's team. After seeing the talent at the camp, head coach Josh Gratton says the Blizzard will be a “competitive, heavy, and physical” team this upcoming season.  

Here, Josh talks about the skill level at the camp and the players' performance.

He also notes, It’s going to be a very entertaining brand of hockey for the fans.

The Blizzard has a six game exhibition schedule in August, where they will face the Flin Flon Bombers three times. The exhibition games will give fans a taste of the season to come.

There's some big news out of the British Columbia Hockey League.

Former Alberni Bulldogs broadcaster and former Flin Flonner Evan "the Hammer" Hammond has unanimously been named the BCHL Broadcaster of the Year for 2026.

Evan had been the voice of the Bulldogs since the 2003-04 season and was one of the most recognizable and popular broadcasters in Western Canada.

Sadly, he passed  away in January.

This is the fourth time that Evan has been recognized for his broadcast talents as the BCHL'S Broadcaster of the Year and winning the Jim Hughson Award.

He also won the award in 2009, 2013 and 2022.

Prior to moving out west, Hammond started his broadcast career at 102.9 CFAR in Flin Flon in the late 90's,  working part time while still in high school.

Hammond had a great passion for sports,  in particular hockey,  and got a chance to get his first play- by-play job for the OCN Blizzard of the MJHL, moving to The Pas in 1999.

These were the glory days of the Blizzard who won 5 straight MJHL Championships with Hammond on the mic for 4 of their league titles, including a trip to Halifax in 2002 for the National Championship.

The Blizzard lost to the host team in the final, but were definitely  one of the top teams in the country. Meanwhile,  Hammond was starting to establish himself as an elite broadcaster in the country as well.

After broadcasting the Blizzard's fifth straight League Championship in 2003, Evan made his way to Vancouver Island to broadcast in the BCHL with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs,  where he remained for over 20 years.

Evan is survived by his mother Heather, his sister Erin, his daughter Cally, and his sons Griffin and Foster.  He was predeceased by his father Cal.

Evan's mother Heather,  who still resides in Flin Flon,  had this to say on the BCHL Hockey website about her son  being recognized with the Broadcaster of the Year award. 

“It is heartwarming that he has not been forgotten and we appreciate it very much. We know ‘Hammer’ would be so pleased and very grateful and hope his legacy lives on.”

Besides being the play-by-play broadcaster of the the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, Evan was the morning announcer of the Pattison radio station The Peak 93.3 FM, an active member of the community,  and a great father and family man.

He was a larger-than-life character that made everyone that knew him smile and he will certainly  be missed.

Rest in Peace.

The U-13 AA  Norman Northstars  have announced their tryout schedule for the fall.

The U13AA Norman Northstars will represent Northern Manitoba in the U13 AA provincial league.  This team is new to our region and will be joining the U13 regional league that has been established by Hockey Manitoba.  

Deadline to register is Monday  August the 31st.

The try-outs will take place on September the 12th and 13th at the Whitney Forum and is open to all players born in 2014-15.

All players that register will be broken up into four practise groups with a game Saturday night at 7pm and a game on Sunday at 11am.

The Emma Lake Golf Course is holding a Hole In One Tournament to support the PA Wildlife Federation.

This takes place on Friday July the 24th with a shotgun start at 1pm.

The Hudbay Aquatic Centre is planning on having their grand opening in early October, but there is already a lot happening.

The new Aquafit program is underway and there are also lots of public swims and lap swims scheduled for the summer. The Aqua Fit takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings as well as Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

The summer price list is also  posted for prices for both drop in and monthly passes.

According to a recent post from The Pas Sweatshop, its weekly boxing class schedule will look a little different throughout July and August.

Adult Fitness Boxing classes will be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The cost to participate is $60 per month.

Meanwhile, the Weekend Warriors program will run on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The monthly fee is $40.

The Flin Flon Bombers Early Bird Season Ticket Campaign is underway and tickets are available for the commemorative 100th season.

Early Bird prices include $200.00 for Youth, $350.00 for Seniors and $400.00 for Adults.

These prices will remain in effect til August the 31st. An extra incentive this year for anyone who purchases a season ticket they will receive a special commemorative coin celebrating the Bombers Championship Season.

Congratulations to former Laronge Ice Wolves Coach, Kevin Kaminski on being selected the new Head Coach and Player Development Consultant for the Sask Super Selects.

Kaminski is no stranger to hockey circles in Saskatchewan as he was born in Churchbridge and played his U-18AAA hockey with the Saskatoon Blazers before going on to a lengthy career with the WHL'S Saskatoon Blades.

Kaminski then went on to play in the NHL for a number of seasons after being drafted by the Minnesota North Stars 48th overall in the 1987 Draft. He also suited up for the Quebec Nordiques and Washington Capitals.

After his playing career was done, Kevin went on to a successful coaching career and has 26 years of experience behind the bench in lots of different leagues.

Kevin most recently coached the Laronge Ice Wolves of the SJHL for the last 7 seasons and was awarded SJHL Coach Of The Year in the 2019-20 season.

Kaminski loves to work with young hockey players and the Sask Super Selects are excited to have his experience and knowledge in helping develop these players both on and off the ice.

Later this month, Halcrow Lake Golf & Country Club will host a Men's Open Tournament for golfers from across the tri-community.

Registration begins at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start scheduled for 11 a.m.

The entry fee is $100 for club members and $125 for non-members. A delicious supper will be served, and cash prizes will be awarded to top performers.

The Province of Saskatchewan has announced a Free Fishing Weekend for you and your family this weekend July the 11th and 12th.

That means any residents or visitors can cast a line without having to purchase a fishing licence.

There are a few things to keep in kind including all regulations still apply, including all angling limits, size restrictions and sport fishing laws remain in full affect.

The Free Fishing Weekend does not apply to National Parks. If you are planning on transporting fish outside the Province, you will still need to purchase a license.

Something new will be happening at the brand new Hudbay Aquatic Centre starting tomorrow.

Aqua Fit which is a low impact workout that adapts all all fitness levels and is open to people of all ages will be holding classes 5 times a week.

The classes will happen Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 9and 10am and Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 8pm.

You can purchase a drop in  pass for $10.50 or a monthly pass for $94.50.

A family member of one of Northern Manitoba's own is asking for the community's help.

It has been announced that beloved local player and hometown product Isaac Tomchak has recently been diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia (SAA), a rare blood disorder that causes bone marrow to stop producing enough new blood cells and platelets .

A relative of Isaac has created a GoFundMe campaign, with 100% of the funds going toward supporting Isaac and his family throughout his road to recovery.

The 2026 Flin Flon Trout Festival Month Long  Fishing Derby has wrapped up with over 100 entries submitted in the Trout, Northern Pike and Walleye categories.

Cash prizes were awarded to the top two entries in each category with $1,000.00 being awarded for first place and $500.00 for second place.

Along with the open soccer tournament, the 12th annual Big Eddy Sports Days committee has announced a co-ed slo-pitch tournament that will run at the same time.

The tournament will take place from July 24 to 26 at both the Fisher Island and Joe A. Ross fields. The entry fee is $500 per team and must be paid by July 20.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the first-, second-, third- and fourth-place teams on both the A side and B side of the tournament.

The SJHL has released their schedule for the up coming 2026-27 season.

Once again each team will play 56 regular season games and play their division opponents 8 times.

The Flin Flon Bombers play in the UPL Division, so they will face the Melfort Mustangs, Nipawin Hawks and Laronge Ice Wolves  8 times.

The season will begin on Friday September the 18th with the Bombers making their way to the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre to face the Laronge Ice Wolves. The Bombers will host the Ice Wolves in their home opener the following Friday September the 25th at the Whitney Forum.

Other notable dates include the Bombers first 4 game in 5 night road trip which will start in Melville Tuesday  September the 29th  before making stops in  Weyburn, Estevan and Yorkton.

The October 3rd matchup in Yorkton will be the Bombers first stop at the Westland Arena,  since winning their first SJHL Championship in 33 years last April.

The Bombers will play their final two games before Christmas against Laronge on December the 18th and 19th before opening up the new year against Melfort at the Whitney Forum on New Year Day  at 7:30pm.

The regular season will come to a close on the weekend of March the 12th and 13th with the Bombers once again facing the Laronge Ice Wolves.

Playoffs will start the following weekend March the 19th.

The Flin Flon Bombers are in need of volunteers for  lots of different capacities over the summer and up coming season.

It is a chance to get involved for the historic 100th Anniversary season.

The Bombers recognize their many dedicated volunteers that have been helping them out for a number of seasons,  but are in need of  more help especially with this being their 100th season.

The Bombers would not be able to remain successful  and continue to operate without all the tremendous volunteers,  and appreciate all the help and support that  they continue to get.

If you are interested in helping out this season,  the hockey club would like you to fill out a volunteer survey which is on their website at bombers.ca or their facebook page.

They will then pass on the information to the applicable coordinator for the areas you selected. FYI, if you would like to help out with game day volunteering,  you won't have to be at every single game, even a few games will make a difference.

The survey will only take a couple of minutes.

Before you know it we will be back at the rink and preparing for another hockey season.

Flin Flon Minor Hockey will be opening their online registration in August and are also planning for their 3 on 3 Jamboree.

The different divisions involved include U-9,U-11 and U-13 and will take place on August the 29th at the Whitney Forum.

Late next month, the Northern Manitoba Blizzard will invite golfers of all skill levels to sign up and take part in their first golf tournament of the season.

The entry fee is $75 per person, and participants can choose between a chicken or pork tenderloin meal.

The summer event is limited to 30 participants and will be held at Halcrow Lake Golf & Country Club.
